Now, to resume normal programming...
We left off with step 7, which was your finished top...
8. Cut your backing and wadding to 1" larger than the finished top. Lay the top out on top of your wadding and backing.
9. Pin. (I use normal pins rather than safetypins or anything else. They're easier to pull out and there isn't much movement with something this small.)
10. Quilt as desired - either in the ditch, or shadow quilting. I used a normal sewing foot with embroidery thread as the top thread in a contrasting colour. I didn't worry about marking - just used the foot as a guide.
10. Square off your mug rug to the desired size with a rotary cutter and ruler. Cut your binding 1.5" wide and follow VeryKerryBerry's single binding tutorial (hers says cut 1.25" but I find 1.5" that little bit easier) or follow the high speed-version here. :)
Lay your binding out flat (not folded!) and start sewing an inch or so away from the end.
When you get all the way around, fold the ends at 45 degress like this:
Fold to one side, like this, and pin.
Sew.
Trim off the ends and sew down to the mugrug. Fold over and it should appear like this...
Iron down the raw edges, turn over and tack through the fold and the back of the fabric with an overstitch. And there you have your mugrug!
Hello Laura! Thank you for your kind words and the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYour mugrug is so wonderful! I love that fabric with animals!
I'm happy to hear it found already new home - now you have good reason to make an other one!
Have a lovely week!

Gorgeous mug rug - my DD would have loved it; she just loves Tas devils. I will be back to look at the tutorial again - our quilting group has asked us to make a few saleable objects as fund-raiser! Thanks Laura.
ReplyDeletePS Hope your hand is all better now!
