Ruby ruby ruby ruby (dah nah nah nah na na)

{Sew} Modern Monday at Canoe Ridge Creations
"Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight,
Do your jelly rolls end up like this when you unravel them the first time..."

Ok, the lyrics don't quite go like that, but they should. How DO you keep a jelly roll neat after you have unraveled it?

I broke out the Ruby jelly roll - why did I buy it. I don't know. I have these moments of amnesia when fabric just flies into my virtual shopping cart and MYSTERIOUSLY then arrives. I have no idea how it happens. Well that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I think I've mentioned I quilt in the kitchen. I usually have table cloth on the table, but as I am sewing so much these days, and as I inevitably end up sewing the table cloth to the quilt and then unpicking and swearing a lot, I've taken it off. I share with the quiltdogs, and they don't eat at the table, obviously, so I only have need for one or two placemats. If I have company, the tablecloth comes out. But I need a placemat and so does my sewing machine. (No it doesn't eat with me, silly, it just needs something to sit on so it doesn't scratch the table). So here are the two superfast jellyroll Quilt-as-you-go (first time trying this - love it!!!) placemats I made from Ruby and some kona solid. :)

Ruby red central stripe, 3x 2.5" strips either side going aqua, grapefruit, aqua (with red patterns). Aqua binding.
I probably didn't need to do the top stitching but I love the look. :) Machine bound - I LOVE machine binding - it's a revalation. :)
Aqua placemat, red on aqua central strip with aqua, grey'n'red and aqua print beside it, red binding.
These came together so fast (less than an hour for 2 placemats), I can't think why I haven't done more quilts this way. There will be more to come I promise!

I think I might do a rail-fence pattern with the rest of the jellyroll, but now I'm set to eat breakfast and sew (not simultaneously, I'm not that clever) without scratching the table, the rest of the jelly roll is going away until some WIPS get done!

But now that I have done a superfast project in a recently released range of precuts, I feel like a REAL modern quilter, instead of a pretend one (who rarely gets things finished and still has projects from the early noughties incomplete). So I'm happy to be linking in with Sew Modern Monday as a bona fide Modern Quilter. :)

Don't worry, I shall post a thoroughly unmodern, completely time consuming quilt picture on Wednesday - another WIP I want out of the way!

  4. The place mats look great. You have scared me off buying a jelly roll!

I'm sorry but I did chuckle when I read that you sewed the tablecoth to your quilt - it's the sort of thing I would do!

Yippee - you're commenting! I _love_ comments. :) I've had so much spam lately though that I'm limiting to registered users for a bit to see if that works... If you're a friend, you can find me on Facebook and comment that way if you have trouble.
