Have you seen a little book (or email) called "Porn for women"?
It's been around on email so many times I don't feel bad about 'borrowing' this image (but if you're looking for a funny gift for a friend, go out and buy it! There, I've done my bit to counter copyright infringement). It's full of pictures like this, and predates the Ryan Gosling meme by YEARS.
I promise if you google it nothing rude will come up in image search. I jokingly call one of the fabric pusher supplier sites I frequent Fabricporn. I think I have a second love after fabric-porn though. It might just be the moment the fabric arrives, but there was an extra special parcel today.
Look closely.
Thread porn.
What could be better than an Italian man sending you free thread? Now that is what I call porn for women! (The street address it was posted from was Via Como, so it possibly passed George Clooney on its way too... I can pretend...) But it came direct from Senore Alex Veronelli at Aurifil - Grazie Senore!
Two reasons I love monofil:
1) It blends in with any colour. Got a multicoloured quilt top and want your thread to blend in? Monofil it.
2) It hides a multitude of sins. I did a lot of FMQing with monofil. A LOT. As it's 'invisible', imperfections are barely noticeable. So you think "gee, I'm doing quite well at this FMQ thing!" Then you swap to high contrast thread and think "HOLY CRAP, I'M TERRIBLE, IT MUST BE THE THREAD". And you swap back to invisible thread. You do some more and get better and better without noticing it, and all of a sudden, the contrast thread is not so much of a problem any more. Thank you invisible thread.
I am going to give the two small rolls, one smoke and one clear, away, to a lucky commenter. Leave a comment below telling me why you'd like to try Aurifil monofilament and I'll get Mr Random to choose a winner.
The big rolls have their own stocking to keep the unruly thread in line. If you don't have a thread stocking, one neat trick for keeping monofil inline and untangled is to pop it in a jam jar (that's jelly to you Yanks) - preferably an empty clean jam jar (I don't think sticky jam would do your machine's insides or your quilt that much good - put it behind your machine near the right hand side and then thread as normal from there. The jar keeps the thread contained but free to unravel as needed without getting caught on any of the top bits on your machine.
I also have five (yes, that's right FIVE) Aurifil thread sampler packs to give away at a later date. I've got to do some more testing before I can write a full review and launch the giveaway, but watch this space. I'll do one soon!

I'd love to try it... I'm still trying to figure different threads out, and my quilting is terrible so monofil is sounding good!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to try Aurifil monofilament, because my last attempt with Coats & Clark invisible thread nearly drove me mad. I might try again with your stocking tip though!
ReplyDeleteI would like to give it a try. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try it. I'm just starting to machine quilt my tops and think the monofil (plus a glass of wine!) is just what I need!
ReplyDeleteI have a landscape quilt that needs invisible thread because of all the color changes. I have been less than happy with the monofilaments I've tried so far. I love Aurifil's cotton threads for piecing and quilting, so would love to try their invisible thread.
ReplyDeleteOnly God could use me for such a package I would be oh so happy :)) I never even knew I would love to try out a try. I hope my dream comes true. Thank you very much for the opportunity for everyone good luck! But mostly me :))

ReplyDeleteI am in the US, so I don't think I count... but just had to say I am drooling!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on a fusible raw edge quilt project that is KILLING me with thread changes. I would absolutely love to get my hands on some Aurifil monofilament thread to try to see if it can save my sanity (or at least help me finish the quilt!). Thank you for considering me!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try it as I'm yet to tackle FMQ :)
ReplyDeleteHi. I've just started machine quilting (I usually hand quilt) and am on the hunt for a really good monofilament thread. I have a specific quilt in mind which is mainly WoW, but has lots of UnRuly letters in it and monofilament would be the best solution, especially Aurifil's brand. Surely that's got to be the best there is!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of monofilament threads but maybe it's because I never tried one that works... Would love to try Aurifils version in my 820.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try Aurifil monofilament, as I am trying to FMQ and I am terrible at it! LOL! Thank you for the chance to win the thread!
ReplyDeletepojeda50@yahoo.com
So funny - I refer to my addiction to "craft porn" frequently in reference to my compulsive collection of crafty books and magazines. I'm almost embarrassed at how many I have!
ReplyDeleteI am not much of a fan of the monofilament thread I have tried for quilting & applique. I would love to try the Aurifil version!!
ReplyDeleteI have never used monofilament thread so I'd love to try it. I use Aurifil thread all of the time and love it. Not sure what project I'd use the monofilament on first - probably one that has lots of contrast in the quilt like orange, navy, and white. ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteI love to use it on t-shirt quilts that I make!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try monofil thread. Lately I've been feeling like my standard Connecting Threads thread is a little bulky for my projects.
ReplyDeleteI'd love a big spool of old rose pink thread for the 'pink's' quilt I'm currently piecing - this thread is lovely to work with - a real treat. I haven't tried the monofilament thread, but then it's something I'm not keen on in applique work (at present)
ReplyDeleteAre these monofilament threads nylon or polyester....the nylon monofilament threads I have tried in the past melt under iron usage..... if they are polyester, I would love to try them....
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try this Aurifil monofilament thread. I already exclusively use Aurifil threads and love them. I haven't liked the other brands of monofilaments that I've tried and my FMQ needs some help.
ReplyDeletei think my dismal FMQ skills would qualify me to NEED this particular porn -ehrm - thread. I laughed so hard at your post. I've muttered so much about fabric porn that my husband had to tell me the kids were wondering what I was talking about, hahahaha. Thanks for this awesome giveaway, and I'm looking forward to your aurafil reviews!
ReplyDeleteThat is my kind of porn! I would love to try the monofilaments for free motion because I am a beginner and would love for my mistakes to be less visible. Aurifil is the best!!
ReplyDeletei am just a beginner at FMQ. i need all the help i can get!!!!!! i don;t like what i have done yet.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried it before, so I'd love to see how it works. I usually use white for quilting.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to try the Aurifil invisible thread! I was working on my mini for the Modern Mini Challenge at Ellison Lane and decided that it really needed to be quilted with invisible thread. Living in the middle of nowhere, WalMart was my only option and I was pleasantly surprised that they carried the Coats and Clark monofilament. It worked OK for what I was doing, but there was not a lot of finesse there. I am betting that the Aurifil thread would give a much better result and I would love to try it out! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI have been dying to try the Aurifil monofilament, but my local quilt shop doesnt carry it! I'm not that good at FMQ and could use all the help I can get!
ReplyDeleteI am really having a lot of fun experimenting with free motion quilting. I am not having fun with threads that keep breaking on me. i am really ready to start experimenting with different types of thread.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this out on my current quilt. I'm not very good at machine quilting yet and need the extra help.
ReplyDeleteI would love to give this thread a try!
ReplyDeleteI am a avid THREADPORN consumer! I would love to try Aurifil monofilament for my quilts. I do a lot of FMQ with other brands and it can be very challenging....what with thread breaking even with tension adjustment & proper needle size. Thanks for the chance to try some!
ReplyDeleteAurifil thread makes me drool. It is my absolute favorite. I would love to try the invisible thread.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to use this thread for free-motion quilting on my quilts. It sounds like I could goof it up royally and no one would ever notice!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I've never even thought about using invisible thread before! You make a great point about FMQ though!
ReplyDeletehmmm can't say I've ever used monofil thread before! I Do LOVE Aurifil though! I use their creme thread for piecing... its amazing!
ReplyDeleteI don't care about me. I want to see if my machine loves this thread. If Thor, the Viking, loves Aurifil monofilament, then so will I.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try monofilament because I'm so afraid of FMQ and ruining a quilt because I don't know how to FMQ. Qith this thread my mistakes would be barely noticeable and as you say I could practice and get better.
ReplyDeleteTerrific giveaway! Thanks.
I've used monofilament thread- as you mentioned, it's great in the beginning when you aren't so confident. My first SID seams were all this thread, because I could wobble a little bit off track and no one would notice in the final product. Tip: remember to reduce your tension.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try Aurifil's monofiliment thread. I used some other brand when I wanted to make some spider webs on a quilt, and it worked well, since it made it look like real spider silk, but that one is a creamy color. I need some clear to try, too. I have a quilt that needs it.
ReplyDeletei have never heard of monofilament thread...sounds like a pretty neat things to try
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'd love to try it since I'm still trying to find a thread that will work well my machine and FMQ :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't used monofilament thread for a while, but there is definitely a time when it is just the right choice. Would love to try the Aurifil mono.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had much in the way of thread experience, but I'd love to try this on a quilt that you don't want the quilting thread to overpower.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a first trial, Always love new tools
ReplyDeleteI want to try Aurifil monofil because I never have.
ReplyDeleteI tried another brand of monofilament thread...OMG WTFrock.. A disaster of monumental proportions.. I t unwound BIG TIME... So then I googled it and ended up whacking it in a jar behind my machine, not ideal but at least it didn't unwind itself and have a naught cat play with it... It nearly sent me to the nut hut!!!

Hahaha my porn is looking at naked .... quilts!
ReplyDeleteThat's what my husband calls it, cause I can get a really guilty/shameful face when he catches me in the act!
Not that I am ashamed, but I know I'm at it all the time ...
I'd love to try this to get better at FMQ withoutvisibleblunders. Yea, I'd like that.
I would love to give this thread a try. I need a little motivation to give FMQ another try.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I would love to try the Aurifil monofilament. I have been practicing free motion and watching all the videos you post and would love to try it on a super colorful quilt I am working on!
ReplyDelete~Carolyn
I'd love to try monofilament! I noticed yesterday my machine cam do a hand quilt stitch (!?) But you need monofilament for the top thread. So I'd love to win this :D
ReplyDeleteSomething that possibly makes my FMQ look awesome? Yes please! I could use all the help I can get!
ReplyDeleteWow I would love to try this, as the only invisible thread around here is that gruesome stuff that is more suited to a fishing rod!
ReplyDeletedo you remember what I suggested doing with Aurifil thread last time you asked for suggestions? Well, I'd do the same again, wrap you up in it, but I can be even more suggestive with that monofilament thread! ;)
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'd love to try it, not least because it would save the whole stress of working out what colour to use on multicoloured projects, like my upcoming rainbow improv curves...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win some thread porn :oD
I have a quilt top done and basted - just trying now to figure out how to quilt it! So a good time for thread :)
ReplyDeleteBowing out of thread giveaway (I do NOT need another expensive collection. I have issues.) However, I had a few thoughts I had to add...
ReplyDelete1. I am pretty sure George touched the package as it went by.(Save the wrapping)Senior Alex saved it from George.
2. I am gonna tattle on you. Weren't you supposed to be wrapping yourself in the thread (thread porn?)for a special photo shoot? And here I find you giving it away. sigh.
3. We are not completely uncivilized. We do have jam (if you search. a lot. LOL).
OK, back to your regularly scheduled blog.
I'd love to see what this thread is like. I currently have a crazy multi coloured top languishing because I don't know what colour to quilt it with. Maybe this is the solution to all my problems.
ReplyDeleteThis year, if I'm quick enough, I plan on teaching myself how to FMQ on a domestic machine and the monofilament would hopefully hide any oopsies whilst still enhancing the quilting!
ReplyDeleteHugs

I have never used monofilament thread so I'd love to try it. I use Aurifil thread all of the time and love it. ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteAurifil is the best thread ever and if they are making monofilament its something I would love to try out. I have a Disney Cars quilt thatI would just love to use the Aurifil monofilament for quilting the details. Pick ME!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try Aurifil monofilament. What I'm using now is just not working well.
ReplyDeletei've used monfilament for raw edge work and other applique and like it. have not used aurifil mono yet and would like to give it a try, too.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to try the Aurifil monofilament because another "other" brand was such a hassle to sew with. So uncooperative.
ReplyDeleteI love the Aurifil thread my new favorite color is 2370 but would love to try this thread as I have some quilts that need to be finished and this would make me put the finishing touches on them.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try it on the King sized quilt I'm currently working on. It's my first this big and will be the first with any free-motion quilting on it; I'm going to need that hidden factor I think.
ReplyDeleteI *need* the Aurifil! I'm going to admit my first attempts at sewing -back in 1997 - included a horrible monofilament (that resembled fishing line). I thought I could save on buying lots of different colours by just 'using the clear stuff'...even in the bobbin.. didnt end well :P I never win anything, but i will wait til after March 10 before I go buy some.. just in case ;)
ReplyDeleteUm, I would like them. Anything to hide my FMQ assult on unsuspecting quilts!
ReplyDeleteOh I'd love to try it on my longarm...
ReplyDeleteThread porn, fabric porn, quilt porn.... it's really all part of the same disease, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThese threads look great - I'm forever searching for the perfect thread.
I would love to try this thread on a appliqué quilt. It sounds like it would be the perfect thread for an appliqué project other than working by hand. Thanks so much for this great giveaway. (mellie003@aol.com)
ReplyDeleteId love to try it on my frame, I've used other monofil but it wasn't too much of a success and the thought that this may have passed by GC makes it extra special :)
ReplyDeletesounds like just what I need to hide all my mistakes!
ReplyDeleteI've never used anything but cotton (except a 'fun' episode with sparkly rayon!) I would love to try it and get a bit more experimental :)
ReplyDeleteI make lots of scrappy quilts, and it's always so hard to figure out what color thread to quilt them in! Monofilament might be just the thing for those "technicolor yawn" type quilts! :P
ReplyDeleteOkay, I wouldn't even know for what reason you would use Monofilament thread so you may have to help me with this! Having only been quilting a bit over a year, I'm still figuring out what everything is and when to use it!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try this! I... suck... at FMQ. BUT with AWESOME thread I couldn't possibly suck right?
ReplyDeleteSounds perfect for trying out fmq! And it would be great for my upcoming rainbow quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try Aurifil thread...as I've never tried it and have heard rave reviews about it. And I've never tried monofilament either. I'm new to the quilting world and this would be perfect at hiding my newbie quilting mistakes...especially when I decide to try fmq. Thanks for a chance to win! :)
ReplyDeletebecause I want to iron it ;)
ReplyDeleteI've never used a monfilament thread but then I'm a free-motion novice. So I'd really like to try to see how it performs. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAfter a bad experience with cheap monofilament quite a few years ago, I think I'm ready to try again. (let's just say I was awfully glad I was wearing my glasses instead of contacts that day as the thread got caught up and my needle broke and went flying at my face, hitting my glasses!) What better way to face my PTMS (Post Traumatic Monofilament Syndrome)than with Aurifil! I've heard so much but have never used it. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteWould love to win! Great thread and I could always use some more.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the threads. I've never tried monofilament in a quilt
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win the thread.
ReplyDelete1. Winning is fun
2. I've been leery of invisible thread and I'd like to try Aurifil brand. I love their cotton thread.
I'd Love to Win! I don't do much with invisible thread now. I usually pass off applique projects to my mom to do for me, since my love is piecing. I'd like to give it a try, though!
ReplyDeleteI would like to use it on a quilted rainbow wall hanging. It would work perfectly, instead of having to change the tread over and over. Thank you for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this thread. I have always thought it would melt too, but now that you have done the melt test, I feel brave. And you are right...who does iron a quilt ?? Oh well, good to know anyway!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the monofilament thread. I have used Aurifil regular thread and it always works great in my machine.
ReplyDeleteI too would love to try this thread.
ReplyDeleteWould love to try it for those times when I just don't know what color thread to use.
ReplyDeleteLisaandmariahcreations@gmail.com
because if the iron dosnt melt it, then im sure washing on a high heat wont either and Im all for that!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try the monofiliment. I've never used them before and would love to see how well they work. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I would love to try it!
ReplyDeletepick me, pick me :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try.
Just think of the postage you could save ;)
I tried monofilaments many years ago with less than satisfactory results - way too stiff and difficult to use. Maybe it's time to give them another whirl.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try it. I have only recently started trying different threads out for different things, and have yet to get any aurifil. So that would give me a good excuse to try it out!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the Aurifil Monofilament because I have been using a poly mono that I don't love. I need it sometimes for faux needle turn applique. (a new technique to me) but I also use it for brights where I don't want the quilting thread to interrupt the lines in the quilt design.
ReplyDeleteI have had to iron over a quilted item before so I can see a reason for your "abuse test." ;-)
I would love to try your Aurifil thread too . The off brand I tried was like trying to quilt with fishing line ! Not fun at all .
ReplyDeleteI just read your post on testing invisiable Aurifil thread. I would love to FMQ with the aurifil thread. The invisiable thread I have been using does melt with heat but then it is close to 15 years old. About time to replace it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try Aurifil monofilament. I've been using YLI for years with no problems and would love to see how Aurifil sews too. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteSince I've been totally brainwashed by a particular thread company (unnamed), I'd love the chance to try out Aurifil's thread to see how it sews up.
ReplyDeletethanks!
I love Aurifil thread and didn't know they had monofilament thread and would love to win some so I could use it! Thanks for the opportuntity to participate in a great give-a-way!

I'd love to try it out, because my quilting is AWFUL! I've only just started, and I would really like to get better and from your post, it sounds as if monofilament might be the way to go.
ReplyDeleteNever tried it before and I am always up for something new!...and Aurifil seems to be calling me like a SIREN.
ReplyDeleteWould be wonderful to have these to try out!
ReplyDeletePlease put my name in the hat!
