Furry Safari Friday

It's the first Friday of the month and that means a finish from me!
Ready??? This is the FIRST pop song I actually remember seeing on TV - it must have been around 1981-2 because it was in our house in England. It wasn't this clip but the music brings back memories. And it fits with my finish.
I bought a fat quarter of safari fabric at the Perth quilt fair last year. I wanted to do something modern with it, and I had a hankering to try using linen. So I came up with this.
I also wanted to try using perle cotton, so I hand quilted it. Unfortunately, I didn't realise perle cotton comes in different weights, and the type of craft store near me... well, if you asked for perle cotton, they'd probably look at you strangely and say "the pearls are in aisle 6 and the cotton is in aisle 14..."

I had hideous trouble getting the needle size right and pulling size 5 thread through a quilt... A less dense batting might have helped - I generally use White-n-warm. I also learnt that with this type of thread, there is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way to thread it. If you run your fingers along the thread, you can feel that running one way is a tiny bit rougher - like hair follicles. You don't want to be pulling it through the wrong way! So it's been quilt a row, wait a few weeks for blisters to recover, quilt a row, wait a few weeks.... So it really is TGIFF!

The linen was nice to work with (for a first go) and I love how it has all come together nicely... It looks cool and modern and cosy and friendly all at the same time.

I'll be popping this in my Etsy store shortly, so if you know anyone who needs a Safari baby quilt, send them my way! Now it's time to link up your finish, or just visit some of the others and leave an encouraging word.

  1. Well done for pushing on through, I'm thinking that was pretty sore on the fingers given how tough it is to get #5 through a bear's nose o.O

  3. Good for you for persevering on the hand quilting! I have a little round rubber disc thingy that does save the fingers a bit!

  10. Lovely quilt and great tip on the perlé! I was hand quilting with Perlé 8 on linen when I read this and tried to feel the right way and the wrong way, will have to practice a bit I think LOL I do love the cotton perlé but I need to buy myself a decent needle!
