It's my turn to host for the Paper-piecing blog hop run by Kristy at QuietPlay. There have been some amazing projects so far, so I'm not even going to try to compete! Instead, I'm going basic and presenting my first effort at designing my own foundation paper-piecing pattern. Eeek!
I'm warning you, it's super simplistic so if you've come looking for a swanky-fandangled paper-pieced blog, this post is not for you!
We decided to kick off the first official meeting of the Perth Modern Quilt Guild with a mug-rug competition. The design has to be based on the PMQG logo, which in turn, is based on the skyline of our city.
First, I drew up a city scene. I wanted to use flashes of colour as a reflection of the city lights in the waters of the Swan River. I can't say I took a lot of time and trouble with this - it's fairly random.
Then, I foundation-pieced the reflections. FreshLemons has a good beginner's foundation paper piecing tutorial here.
I started to piece the buildings using the freezer-paper-piecing method - I was DETERMINED to give it another shot - but I was ready to climb the walls after the third piece, so I went back to straight foundation piecing.
I free-motion quilted around the buildings with a geometric design.
And I went with wavy free-motion quilting for the water. I used VeryKerryBerry's single binding tutorial, except that I cut it to 1.5" wide and machined it down on both sides. And h
And that's it! My quick-n-dirty mugrug!

Foundation all the way baby :oD Fun idea (BTW miss overachiever, can I tell you that your MQG posts always give me a laugh, I'll tell you why in October ;o) )
ReplyDeleteLove it Laura! Great fabric representation of the PMQG logo! I like the way you alternated the colours on the water for the reflection - very clever!
ReplyDeleteVery cool!! Great interpretation.
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Loving the reflection in the water. Is this your competition entry? I'm already getting excited after seeing yours and Bev's.
ReplyDeleteFancy! Great job.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great Laura. I think straight paper piecing is the way to go. I tried freezer paper but didn't like it.
ReplyDeleteThis is great, I have yet to try designing my own blocks... one day perhaps!
ReplyDeleteFabulous!!!
ReplyDeleteVery creative. I loved the colors.
ReplyDeleteI like your project...it's neat how you were able to design your own block. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I like all the colors and the different quilting designs.
ReplyDeleteThis might just have given me the motivation to get off my lazy backside and design my own paper pieced block- Oh and who needs fancy fandangled anyway?
ReplyDeleteThis is fab! I especially love the way you've done the reflections in the water :)
