WIP Wednesday and a giveaway!

Last week, two Fabulous Things happened.
1. I hit 400 followers.

2. I got a parcel of fabric I'd ordered from Fabricworm. It was the best fabricporn ever, so I wrote a little poem. That's how excited I got. Fabricworm is and has been one of my favourite shops since I started ordering online. No, they're not a sponsor. (No, I'm not getting freebies. I just love their fabric, their service and their style).

One of my favourite Fabricworm lines is Storyboek. I've been stashing Storyboek I for a while and have been waiting impatiently for Storyboek II to come out. But I've been too busy with other projects to work with it. Luckily someone loves it as much as I do and requested a quilt for her new baby granddaughter made from it, so I finally got to have a decent play.

I fussy-cut around some of the Storyboek scenes and bordered them with different size borders.  I HAD to use bits of the Storyboek II line as well - it was just too cute not to. The Storyboek II scenes are much bigger than Storyboek I, so that was a challenge.
Because I had size constraints to work to (my customer wants a smallish wall hanging) I had to restrain myself quite severely.

I was SO grateful for my design wall in arranging and rearranging the blocks!

The baby's nursery is lemon, so I tried to draw some of the yellow out of the fabric too. This is what I came up with.

It's clean, it's simple and it lets the fabrics speak for themselves. I was toying with the idea of appliquéing some apples or flowers or toad stalls, but I think there's enough going on already. I may trapunto the larger scenes to give them a bit more oomph and free motion around them. The tricky decision is what colour to bind it in as I'm out of that coral pearls fabric and don't have enough of anything beside the coral forest scene, and I'm loathe to waste that on binding...

So back to the story of my literary masterpiece entitled 'An Ode to Fabricporn'. and an email from the Worm herself, I was a little cheeky and mentioned Fabulous Thing Number 1 (400+ followers) and said I'd like to do a giveaway, and if they happened to have a fat quarter or two to spare... Cynthia got back to me straight away and asked if a WHOLE FAT QUARTER BUNDLE OF STORYBOEK II would do? Geez Louise, would it ever!!! Dammit, I really should have begged for ME! :)

So some lucky follower will get this gorgeous bundle.  It goes to you direct from Fabricworm so a) I save on the shipping and b) I can't snaffle a few pieces or get it "lost in the post". Damn.

400 followers deserves 4 chances to enter..
1. As I don't like my giveaways to be boring, leave me a comment with a rhyming couplet that could be added to my Ode to Fabricporn. (1 comment)
2. Make a suggestion about the finishing of this WIP (binding, quilting, backing etc). (1 comment)
3. Mention this giveaway on your blog or twitter and leave a comment with the URL. (1 comment)
4. Tell me what your favourite line from Fabricworm is. (1 comment)

This giveaway is open until next Wednesday, 5pm Western Australia time (That's Tuesday night for some of you!) and don't forget the Echinops and Aster pattern giveaway is still open.

Linking up with Lee for WIP Wednesday!

  1. Your wall quilt is marvelous! I was thinking maybe binding in the lemon yellow? But I just reread and realized that probably the walls are lemon, and that would just disappear. Perhaps pick up the green somehow? But that might be Christmasy.
Do you have any of the pearls fabric with the white background and the three colors of pearls? That might look really nice!

  2. My favorite line over at Fabricworm is a toss up between Madrona Road and Out to Sea. They're both so awesome but for entirely different reasons!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I tried to write a couplet. It turned into quite a mouthful!

Circles show off FabricWorm's vast and great selection,
The modern fabric options belying a certain predilection.

  4. Congrats! I wish I could get 40 followers! I wrote a couplet:

Thy fabricworm defined is a devotee of fabric
I've met thy rule and filled my entire walk-up attic.

  5. I love your WIP! for binding, I like to choose a color that is featured just a tiny bit in a quilt, so that it still matches, but provides some contrast. I would probably choose a stripe with yellow or green in it.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Gosh, I can't pick just one line! If I had to, I really like Aneela Hoey's "Walk in the woods".

    ReplyDelete
  7. Love the quilt, I would add some embellishments or appliques, maybe yoyos in the corner to give it some dimension. Maybe do the binding in red or the pretty aqua you used in the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  8. There are lots of favorites at Fabricworm but I really like Out to Sea, but Nursery Versery and all those cool chevrons are a very close 2nd :) Thanks for the giveaway and congrats!

  12. I don't play favourites, all quilting fabrics are good to me!

    ReplyDelete
  13. 400 followers - yay for you and I am so happy to be one of them!! Binding - I was thinking a yellow and white stripe/chevron, or red and white stripe/cevron. Quilting - what about following around the rectangles so they are frames and inside each one doa diff FMQ pattern?

    http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2012/08/faux-piped-binding.html

    ReplyDelete
  38. What the heck is a rhyming couplet?
Can I just have the fabric?...yeah, I bet!

    ReplyDelete
  39. A run of faux piping would look great around the inside edge of the binding!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sarah Jane Out to Sea is pretty cute!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Seaside Cottage, the colours are my favourites!

    ReplyDelete
  42. For the quilting, how about an "organic" wavy line, on the diagonal. I'd use white so as not to overwhelm the centres of the squares.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I tried a couplet, pretty bad stuff, I know! Oh, thanks for a great giveaway.

Fabricworm, Fabricworm, you are my joy
Your offerings delight every girl and boy

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Laura! That is so beautiful quilt and those fabrics just adorable! For the binding I would choose green or grey. If it's not coming too big you could make a border with yellow and binding with green or white. Thank you so much for a fantastic give away! x Teje

    ReplyDelete
  45. ... knit and cut, play with the dog, dress is done! Hmmm I really tried, but if I could say it in Finnish ...
When I read your post I decided to say that because you didn't think well and ask these fabrics for yourself, we share them ... but then you said that you won't even see them ... so now I hope they all come to me!
    Happy sewing! x Teje

    ReplyDelete
  46. 'Fabricworm' is so wonderful and full of adorable fabrics! In the beginning of my long wish list are 'Man's Best Friend' (dogs) and 'Sailor Kitty' (cats). They are soooooooo cute!

    ReplyDelete
  47. What a fantastic giveaway! I've coveted both lines of fabric for a while, since the second one came out. I would probably use the yellow for binding unless the baby's room is painted the same color. Then maybe I'd use charcoal.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm loving Out To Sea at the moment!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would probably go with a solid binding. Not sure what colour though....

    ReplyDelete

But Quokka Quilts magic '400' is to what I do aspire.

    ReplyDelete

    Barb@Witsend

    ReplyDelete
  68. The choice doth overwhelm me, the baby has a squirm, together we decide on precious fabric from Fabricworm! - at least I had a go ;)

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's a really adorable quilt! I'd go with lemon binding and maybe some pale yellow fmq - leaves and flowers?

    ReplyDelete
  70. AMH Field Study - I'm seriously lusting after it!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. This is so pretty! I would bind it with either blue or yellow

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm really loving out to sea right now!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hm, a couplet...

I spend so much time petting you, your purpose is quite lost.
Oh, fabricporn, I love you so, particularly at low cost!

I'm no Shakespeare, but it's 8:30AM and I've already been to the gym, so that's an acceptable excuse...right? ;) Thanks for the chance and congrats on 400 followers!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Suggestion for your WIP - simple quilting! The fabrics are wonderful that you wouldn't want to overwhelm them with complicated quilting, I wouldn't think. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Favorite on Fabriworm was really hard to choose! But my pick is Michael Miller's Ta dot FQ sample bundle. Just love those dots!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I like to rest on fabric hills
    My problem is
They keep adding to my bills!

(Sorry, this is probably the worst ever...!)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hmmm.. Quilting? Would baptist fans be too busy?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Dyslexia really is the pits,
It makes my rhymes all come out shit...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Loving the top, hmm, maybe quilt the main bits to make the scenes pop a bit?

    ReplyDelete
  80. As for the fabric, it's a toss up between the Mod basics and the Kei dots...

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think I would bind the quilt in that yellow color you used in it to draw more of the yellow out.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am really wanting some Chicopee right now.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Love your Storyboek quilt! Thanks for linking up with WIP Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  84. To quilt the hanging I would definitely outline the cute little motifs, then perhaps a loopy meander over the rest. The binding would look adorable if it was the orange with the little pearls. It would really pop against a yellow wall.

    ReplyDelete
  85. A light blue polka dot might be nice for the binding.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I love the new momo oh deer patterns

    ReplyDelete
  87. I twitted it...

  91. "O how I love thy fabrics soft
Ordering enough to fill my loft."

    msstitcher1948@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love a good red binding, but for your WIP, I think that binding in white or gray would be best. Bty, that quilt is so pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  93. You know Im a Fabricworm junkie,
    my taste is rather funky,
From Camp Sur to Crab Shack,
Buying black is just plain whack.

    ReplyDelete
  94. For the binding and backing I always choose the color used least for binding and the 2nd least color used for the backing. Its all about the contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hands Down my fav line is CAMP SUR! I cannot wait for this fabric to come out to make curtains for my vintage camper!

    ReplyDelete
  96. A couplet for you:

And dare I bring to my abode,
The trucks and flow'rs of Madrona Road.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I love Fabricworms custom bundles, and Madrona Road by Violet Craft, and Commute for Birch Fabrics, and...
    Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  98. That quilt top is so cute! My suggestion? Checkerboard border! I love them and there is a checkerboard border on almost everything I make. That is just how I roll... ;)

    Love it!

Also that bundle looks awesome! Thanks for a chance or four to win it!

    ReplyDelete
  99. (My addition to your ode)

However as I end it I would say just one thing more,
I love this wonderous fabricporn as I've loved nothing before.

    :D

    ReplyDelete
  100. Right now I'm coveting 2 different bundles over at Fabricworm.

Echino Decoro, Gothic. I just love them!

Also the Michael Miller Little Elephants. So adorably cute!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I love scrappy bindings but I also think the smoke would look nice and tie the whole wall hanging together. It looks so fun. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Oh Fabricworm you are so cruel,
you stock more fabric, each one a jewel.
To pick just one, how can I ever.
I hide the Visa, no one's the wiser.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Right now I'm wanting some chicopee. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  104. After reading your post,I checked out their site and got some Little Kukla and small Riley Blake chevrons, so those would be my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Oh I think that your WIP is screapming for a scrappy binding of the scraps left over from the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  106. For the line that is my favorite from fabricworm I think I have to go with commute by jay-cyn designs. It's just too cute with all the things that go in it!

    ReplyDelete
  107. To add to your wonderful Ode to Fabricporn...

Oh Fabricporn my day is lost to staring at the screen.
My cart so full from all my clicks, it's bordering obscene!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Thy fabric line is so divine
I only wish it could be all mine

    ReplyDelete
  109. I think the binding would be nice a darker gray. Like a frame.
    Congrats on your follower milestone!!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Second time around! Some whimsical quilting would look great on this quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Second time around - Sly Woods is one of my favourite!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Fabricworm is my happy place, always puts a smile on a grumpy face. A bit lame but there you go! Thanks for the lovely giveaway

    ReplyDelete
  113. For quilting, I'd go with a simple echo quilting just outside each seamline - the pattern is so lovely I think the quilting shouldn't compete with it & the gorgeous fabric too much.

    ReplyDelete
  114. My current favourite fabric line at Fabricworm is Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt, though I'm only dreaming about it as I'm on a serious fabric diet! Congrats on the 400 followers, here's to the next 400.

    ReplyDelete
  115. It looks like you had fun playing with this. I'm like that with the ghastlies - stockpiling it up as I get my greedy little hands on it, but haven't started using it yet.

As to binding, I think binding it in that same yellow you've used would look really good.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I like Michael Miller's Tweetie Pie

    ReplyDelete
  117. I tweeted:

    https://twitter.com/nalaxu/status/238583203248627712

    ReplyDelete
  118. And now with my poem and quilt complete,
I find it is time to take my seat.

    ReplyDelete
  119. How about binding it with one of the colors that you didn't use in the quilt?

    ReplyDelete
  120. I just can't choose a favourite , but in order to answer the question to win the prize I'm in love with Sarah Jane's Out to sea fabric line. Thanks !

    ReplyDelete
  121. To finish off the baby quilt I would bind it in the solid yellow that you've used ....but if the walls are lemon then I would bind it in grey or the off white color in the storyboek blocks background color.
    Thanks !

    ReplyDelete
  122. I'm really loving Mint Blossom, Down Under, Outback Ivory
    Right now.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I would bind it with a solid...probably the yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  124. My favorite line at fabricworm is Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt. There are photos on their blog which are inspiring.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Bind it with a gray solid, use a white backing since is a wall hanging, quilt the blocks in the ditch with extra batting/trapunto around the green tree, main animal and main person in each scene. I like the idea of a narrow yellow vertical border to give some definition to the wall hanging and match the one you made horizontally. I cannot see the colors well so this is a rough suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Thy mermaids, horses, and windmills are so fine
And Storyboek reminds me of Once Upon A Time!

    Here's my rhyming couplet.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Love your storyboek quilt! Hmmm How about some contrast binding using a navy blue solid or perhaps a grey solid.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I love Sarah Jane's "Out to Sea" range that Fabricworm stocks

    ReplyDelete
  129. And here's a (naff) wee rhyming couplet for you...

My creditcard I hide before I fill my cart,
But it just doesn't help- I know my details off by heart!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Oh fabric worm it is no wonder
that I have hours to ponder
all those fabrics, oh my dear,
makes my wallet empty, I fear!

Hope that is what you were asking for. As english is not my mother language it is quite hard to make rhymes up. But it was fun and I love those fabrics! Cute!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Oh I love : Heather Mulder Peterson, Seaside Cottage! Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  132. ......
but one more thing, before I go, I really have to say,
This fabricporn from Fabricworm has brightened up my day!!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  133. I think that the grey would be the perfect backing-- and if you have enough of the red with dots-- it would be perfect cut on the diagonal for binding. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  134. I love the Heather Mulder Peterson, Seaside Cottage line! (among hundreds of others! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  135. I tweeted! :-) https://twitter.com/GwenWindham/status/239331692953886721

    ReplyDelete
  136. I really like A Walk In The Woods. They are so cute. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I blogged about your giveaway today. Here's the link.
    http://maxinegiveaways.blogspot.com/2012/08/vintage-holiday-qal_25.html

    ReplyDelete
  138. Since the walls are yellow, I would go with a solid Kona gray to frame the quilt. Cute!

    ReplyDelete
  139. It's time to quilt, skipping as I go
Thank you Fabric Worm for letting me have so much fun to sew.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I would look for a binding with a stripe that has those colors or black/white maybe? As I'm terrible for finishing, I'd do better to help you pick fabrics for a start! :) Love the colors and layout--and the red print at the top/bottom--adds definite punch!

    ReplyDelete
  141. I just spotted the Camp Sur line and I love it! I have a thing for vintage trailers and this fabric is so cute! I think I really NEED this :)

    ReplyDelete
  142. I would quilt your master piece with straight lines. But that's just me, because I work on a older machine that does not do free motion quilting!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Ode to Fabricporn....

    Another fabric store to adore!
So many lines, please send me a sign!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I think that you could bind it with a grey and white spot fabric or just a plain grey.

    ReplyDelete
  145. My favourite line from Fabricworm is Oh Deer.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Ode to Fabricworm:

Thy site is clean and clear and so very easy to use,
All those little fabric thumbnails are my quilting muse

    ReplyDelete
  147. But let me say, just one more thing, Fabricworm, you make my spirits sing!

    ReplyDelete
  148. I just bought some of the Heather Ross Nursery Versery. LOVE it!

    ReplyDelete
  149. I would use some solids in the same colorway and maybe a few of the prints you used for the borders around the blocks and make a pieced backing. I'd bind it with either a solid or a small print.

    ReplyDelete
  150. That's a seriously cute wallhanging :) I think binding incorporating either some yellow or that lovely green would work well. I'd have to see the green to be sure, though - it might end up looking too Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  151. I think my favourite line at Fabric Worm is the Riley Blake Small Chevrons :)

    ReplyDelete
  152. I would definitely add some more yellow. I think some outline quilting around the little landscapes with a background fill behind them. Some Stitch in the Ditch and then a simple design in the block borders.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I agree with the other posters. There is just not enough yellow. I prefer prints to solids, so I would choose a print for the binding. Maybe something pokadot?

    ReplyDelete
  154. Oh delightful fabric, let me caress thee with mine eye,
For alas, I must cut thee soon and so we shall say goodbye.

  155. Maybe could use some of that creamy yellow for the binding. Or a pale pink that picks out the color of the little windmills!

    Pathetic, I know.

  161. I gave my opinion the other night via text - so I'm counting that as my entry for chance #2. ;)

(I know I've missed chance #1 but, honestly, can you picture me rhyming?? Dog, hog, bog...)

  164. My ode to Fabric couplet...

Spots and stripes, I love them best,
Hearts and flowers don't pass the test.
Little cute prints with animals and bugs,
Fill my fabric heart with hugs.
Choosing fabric can be terribly tricky,
Especially when the choices are oh so pretty.

  165. Hi Laura,
How about some dotty binding, bringing out a couple of the colours in your quilt? It's lovely :-)

  168. An Ode to Fabric

    Luscious, soft, lovely and sweet,

And as many colours and styles as you may ever want to meet,

A parcel in the post office can make my day,

When it contains new fabric with which I can play.

  169. I think skinny side borders in the yellow and then grey - especially if you can find the same shade of grey you used with polka dots - for the binding.
