Zipadeedoodah: Double zippered pocket tutorial

What with life getting in the way (still life, haven't made Lainey's last visit to the vet yet), I haven't got a finish I can SHOW this Friday. I do have a finish, but as I can't show it and as I wasn't sure on Monday that I wouldn't be making a vet visit later in the week and not in the mood to party, Erin of MissyMac Creations has kindly stepped in to host the TGIFF linky party.  It doesn't look much here, but it's swoon-worthy finished, believe me...

Double pocket zipper tutorial

The same lovely lady this bag is going to requested a zipper tutorial for the double zippered pocket. It may seem obvious to many of you, but it was a revelation to me. I've never been confident putting zips in and never thought to do it like this! So what follows is a LOT of photos!  

I reluctantly cut into my last GORGEOUS piece of Terrain . But this bag and the recipient deserved it (is it too late to get it out the post? sigh)

1. Cut a piece of material approximately the width of your zipper, and twice the depth you want the pocket. My zip is 7" wide and deep enough to fit my iPhone, keys and lady-supplies. ;) I'm a bit paranoid about not having lady-supplies on hand so I like to have a zippered pocket in my bag.

2. Place the closed zip right side down on the top edge of the fabric and using your zipper foot, start sewing it down.


When you get close to the end, stop with your needle down and wriggle the zip back past the zipper foot, thus, then finish sewing to the end.


3. Fold your fabric right sides together (photo a) and sew the other side of the zipper down (b).

Repeat the moving the zippy trick before you get to the bulky bit.

 Now you should have something that looks like this -  a 'circle' of fabric with the zip joining it:

 4. Making sure the zipper is OPEN (hard to turn inside out if it's closed), flatten the pocket and sew the sides down.


5. Turn it inside out through the zipper and voila! You have a little zippered pouch!

 6. Sew three sides of the pocket down onto your lining.

Ta dah!!!
