I also looked at this fellow and found similar colours coming out.
My stash of green is limited, travelling as I am at the moment, so I settled on this photo. Can you guess which current line of fabric popped into my mind?
Have you guessed? I'd pre-ordered a bundle (some from Fabric Worm and some from Pink Castle Fabrics as it was selling out so fast) to be sent to Danny so picked it up at Sewing Summit. There was really only one choice for Salt Lake City for me!

Did you guess Madrona Road?! It is just perfect.
Katy has been teaching me camera tricks, and one of my big requests was getting my head around taking closeups of fabric. Trick - aperture number SMALL and focus close. (That's probably not technically correct, and Katy will probably wince and yell at me, but that's how I have it in my head at the moment). We were losing the light so it's not the best, but as the master photographer was in charge, you can blame her for the colours but they are JUST the right fabrics for Salt Lake City colours.
I pieced my star here and there, including on the road between Mesa Verde and Monument Valley. Here's me at Mesa Verde:
And at Monument Valley (I'm sure John Wayne is turning over in his cryogenic freezer).
We got some strange looks, I can tell you, which didn't stop when we attempted to explain... Anyhoo, here's my finished block...
I embroidered 'SLC' on it in perle cotton (DMC). Not sure if I'll keep it there, but happy with it at the moment!
Now there is still plenty of time until November 30 to join in and create a block. If choosing a picture and finding the fabrics sounds too hard, the lovely Tammy of Marmalade Fabrics has done some of the work for you. Don't these fabrics work so well for Vegas?
And she's called this one 'Dam It!' <GROAN>.
She's made a heap more so check them out here on her blog or here in the shop! Hope you enjoyed my first finished block story. Check out some of the others happening at the moment.

Bon voyage!
Your photography jargon is amazing. And best of all, I understand it. lol. Love the block.
ReplyDeleteWhen strangers give you funny looks just tell them its an Australian custom dating back generations. Who's to know different?! I notice Deidre is keeping a low profile, under the weather perhaps or still recovering from her case of cactus-butt?
ReplyDeleteLooks great. And you know, getting wierd looks while travelling is all part of the fun.
ReplyDeleteLove the colours of your Rose Star block! Matches your photo fabulously!
ReplyDeleteI am impressed! Hand sewing ON THE ROAD no less! Your enthusiasm knows no bounds dear Laura. I love your block too. Practising for our quilt flash mob sew in when you get back? Yes! Keep up all the good work. xx
ReplyDeleteBrilliant x
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I like the little embroidered touch for SLC... will be a great addition to all of them, I think.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are enjoying your travels. The reminder to pick you up from the airport popped up on my calendar yesterday - so I promise not to leave you stranded (like, you know, some people do... to their own parents...)
