Here's a closer look:
And the bottom:
It is a mammoth effort. The scissor handles on the initial cutting of pinetrees wore my little fingers to the bone. I started with the eagle block (below) and knew NOTHING about iron-on appliqué for landscape quilts.
I'm a lot wiser now...
All the little bits, including the flowers on the bear paw bloom, are individually cut and then ironed on and sewn down.
Imagine machining all those little shapes down! And then deciding in a blinding flash of genius (not) to outline them all to make them stand out. Yup, that's right. Call the men in white suits.
I spent a fair amount of time debating with my machine whether it would sew with the monofilament thread, or whether it would just eat it. Half the time it won. Half the time I did. I probably spent about 4 hours engaged in this debate though.
I don't know what I'd have done without the massive spools of Aurifil monofilament thread Mr Alex sent me... I used the clear for most of the quilting and the black for the water under the ducks and a few other dark places, like the bears.
The other thing that took a fair amount of time at the end was a jealous puppy. That kinda made the final quilting process run as follows:
- Sew for 2 minutes.
- Chase puppy.
- Retrieve scrap of fabric.
- Distract puppy with toy.
- Sew for 3 minutes.
- Chase puppy.
- Remove packaging from wonderclips from puppy's mouth.
- Distract puppy with chew stick.
- Sew for 90 seconds... etc. etc.

As the sun goes down on this project, I'm wondering which to finish next and TRYING to restrain myself from starting a new one!
I hope you've enjoyed my visual journey with this quilt. It's now time to link up... Please link back here or to TGIFF if you've

Glad you beat it into submission finally! I called the men in white coats for you long ages ago, but they seem to have got lost...
ReplyDeleteThat truly is an epic finish. But worth the wait, I'm thinking. Congratulations.

ReplyDeleteYou are amazing! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteWell done on an epic finish Laura!
ReplyDeleteW. O. W!!! What an epic quilt indeed! And it sounds like quilting with puppies is just like quilting with little kids...
ReplyDeleteExcellent job! That is absolutely stunning!! I do the same thing, with the puppy, but have to do it with my cat too. They drive me bonkers and slow down my process but they're also pretty awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! So glad you finished it!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! My four year old just said "that looks great! I want you to make me one!" Ummmmm.......I'm not that brave! Well done!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is amazing! Very nicely done!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this is stunning! Bravo for such an amazing finish!
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible. Really. What a beautiful piece to be proud of. Well done.
ReplyDeleteOh, Brava!!! Marvelously finished. I'm so daunted by the thought of actually finishing my McKenna Ryan projects. Hey - did you outline everything flat and then layer/quilt it, or did you do a stitch-it-down-while-quilting approach? I just love the deer - great fabric placement!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning!! Congrats on a fabulous finish!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is gorgeous. I'm glad you got it finished. Now it can be enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteSo stunning! Your quilting adds so much... you should be VERY proud.
ReplyDeleteWow! Your quilt is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLaura that is truly incredible!! I agree, epic!
ReplyDeleteWow - is all I can say!
ReplyDeleteIt is fabulous, well worth the angst!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic Laura! All of that crazy, tiny piecing and sewing really paid off I think (although you might be needing recovery time after). ;) My cat likes to reach up and tap me on the shoulder when I sew. Every couple of minutes "meowww--tap, tap--meow". Then she scampers away to apparently start a game of hide-and-seek. Yup every.single.time! ;)
ReplyDeleteWOW!! i am "jaw dropping" amazed!! sooo talented, thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say about that quilt is DAMN! That is some amazing quiltiness right there! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteGreat finish Laura. What's the plan for it? Display?
ReplyDeleteFantastic work Laura- I'm not surprised it took you so long to finish it. Such a lot of work - beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Quilt! Congratulations upon such an impressive result. This is an epic undertaking, no wonder there was a puppy with her nose out of joint!
ReplyDeleteOh my! This is incredible! You should be very very proud indeed!
ReplyDeleteWow! It's stunning. Congrats on the finish.
ReplyDeleteI love so many of her patterns. Are you tempted to do another or was one enough?
