Now that I have finished a major WIP, the question is still bugging me - what to do next? There are so many abandoned projects - either because a new one came along or I hit a roadblock or didn't like the way something was going and took a break... Or because I am merely a fickle creature with quilting ADHD. I don't need to start new projects with that many old ones cramming up my creative space, so I REALLY WANT TO FINISH SOME.I decided to finish off my Mondrian quilt top first. It just needed one more set of borders to make it the right size to fit my bed. I was nearly there when I found I was 12" WOF short of Kona white. I thought I had a stash. I didn't, or I can't find it. My sewing room is a disgrace. I have literally crammed fabric into every nook and cranny. So perhaps the Kona is there, but I was back to square one with deciding what to work on.
So I don't have time to quilt, because I am spending hours paralysed by trying to decide which WIP to work on, trying to work out why I stopped working on it (was I short on fabric?), which lovely line of fabric should I tackle next? The question needs to be answered by Friday morning at the latest, for the time being at least, as we have a Perth Modern Quilt Guild retreat which I am SO looking forward to.
I've narrowed the choices down.
To sum up
- Mondrian (when the white arrives) is the first to work on because this is what I am most motivated about.
- Cancer quilt because it is the longest WIP and I can force myself to focus at it all weekend on retreat
- Paintbox quilt (ditto to take to retreat if I get stuck on the Cancer quilt for some reason
- Terrain top (can't find a photo) just needs borders
- Washi - I'm a bit 'blah' about this. Likely to abandon it.
- Soul flowers - the quilting is demotivating me - I need a longarm!!
Does anyone else get like this, or is it just me???
I've been there. I stop working on a project and cant remember why...or what I was doing. It takes twice as long to start up again because I have to rethink things.
ReplyDeleteFor me It's definitely the glittering lights of the new fabric and projects that just hypnotise me into starting new things and neglecting ones that were once new!!
ReplyDeleteI am SO easily distracted it is not even funny! So, right there with you!
ReplyDeleteI really think we all are a bit ADHD if you're a quilter! How can you not get distracted with so many beautiful fabrics and a million ways to sew them together. I have many unfinished projects because everywhere I look there is inspiration for me to start another project! You are not alone! I wish you luck!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your Mondrian quilt!
ReplyDeleteOnce I get an idea for a new project, I also suddenly get bored by what I am working on. I have a top I was so excited about, and it needs a pieced border, done otherwise, and I just keep starting new things instead of finishing it. I am headed to a retreat this weekend, too, and it is on my to-do list, but I have two other new projects I am taking that I am more excited about working on.
I get stuck all the time like that BUT how about working a LITTLE bit on maybe 2 of them, then when those 2 are done allow yourself 1 new project, or work on one as a leader and ender project, this way it'll get done before you know it!
ReplyDeleteYour Mondrain quilt is fabulous. I love his art but never thought of making a quilt out of it. So very clever.
ReplyDeleteI won't count my WIPs because I'm afraid of how many I will find. And yet I can't seem to find the motivation to work on one of them. When you find some, share a little with me, ok? ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Laura! Wonderful projects! Too bad you didn't have the Kona when you had the inspiration to finish that quilt! For my own surprise, I seem to finish my projects quite well. I guess it's because I don't have quilt shops anywhere here to buy easily new fabrics. x Teje
ReplyDeleteOh, I get like this! ;D And I understand COMPLETELY! Do you want votes? ::grin:: The Terrain one! Oh My Gosh!! That is fabulous. :D :D
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for the ADHD ;o) Oh, and who am I sending the kicking and snoring note to for Friday? Take the top though, someone might have some Kona white, not least to bribe you not to share a bed with them... :oD
ReplyDeleteI'd want to finish the Mondrian and get it on my bed!
ReplyDeleteYes, I get like that but usually I know why my projects have stalled! That's why I set up "2013: The Year of the Finished Project" linky party -- to motivate myself to get some things finished. How can a relatively new quilter have so many UFOs/WIPs? Why are new projects so hard to resist? Anyway, my rule for myself is finish two before a new project can be started -- that will at least cut down the UFOs by half next year! LOL
I can totally relate! Have fun at your retreat and I hope you get heaps done...
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I may need a room for just my WIPs soon. If I sit there for too long trying to decide which one to work on it most often leads to me starting something new that I want to work on.
ReplyDeleteI always thought I would be a "finish one thing before the next" kind of quilter. But alas, I seem to be falling in to the opposite position! But that's ok! Maybe pick a number out of a hat and go with it? lol
ReplyDeleteI'm slow enough at it that I always have another one on the horizon. For my own sanity (two small kids, house on the market) I try to only have one or two projects going at a time. I have a HUGE backlog of ideas/inspiration on pinterest. I keep telling myself one day I will have loads of time, and to enjoy my children while they are still so young!
ReplyDeleteI used to be like that when I just did stitching. But now it's not so much not sure what to work on, or why I stopped something, it's that I want to work on everything NOW :)
ReplyDeleteLove the mondrian quilt. Good luck getting everything sorted to work down your list
Gahhhhhh, your WIPs are all so pretty. You should have heard me looking at the slideshow. It was one gasp and ooh and ahh after another. Good for you knocking these out! I should definitely do some of that around here ;-) I can't wait to see them!!!
