in which I celebrate 50+ followers and blog about vision

Quiet week... but plenty to do, if that makes sense... I can't believe I've got over 50 followers. I'm happy now. It's more than I hoped for. 50 is quite a nice number -  I can get to know and communicate with  regular commenters without it feeling overwhelming or anonymous. :) I'd name names and say LOVE talking to you peeps , but I'm scared I'd forget someone! So hugs to all!

I AM going to mention one follower and apologise to him in advance, because this post is all about vision and colour. So Giles, stop reading NOW. If you're curious as to why, go on over and have a look at Giles' blog, Touch and Sew, which is about learning to quilt blind. Literally. Sight is something I take for granted and losing it would be just devastating, especially as a colour lover. Giles' blog reminds me to appreciate it and I'm rather in awe of what he's doing. There are screen readers that help vision impaired people use the web, but I'm pretty sure that just embedding a picture in a blog will not provide what is called a 'text alternative' or 'alt text' in the e-publishing world. So I'm captioning the pics below for a screen reader as Giles is only recently blind and can remember colour well :)

All the images below are from Design Seeds , and I have put a few more on Pinterest as there were so many I loved. I thought Design Seeds was a magical site where you could upload a picture and it would pull out Kona-co-ordinated fabric bundles. Alas, it's not quite that magic - there is a human eye behind it. I found it via the Dead-Simple-Quilt-A-Long (which I don't have time to join but I'm enjoying watching the progress). And I'm hooked.

WARNING - don't look at it if you have a deadline and don't have time to get lost. Because you will.

Here are some of my favourites.
Looks like Scottish loch with vivid aqua waters

Again Scottish feeling but rolling fields from emerald green through to two shades of heather

highly photoshopped (I think) ice blue water with 3 dark grey rocks and a spectacular peach/mauve sunset

Greece perhaps? grey stone walls, with navy steps leading to a stunning aquamarine sea

You can see travel is on my mind!

A loaf of crusty brown bread sliced on a hessian sack against aqua backdrop

Blueberries in a chocolate looking fluted cup. Need I say more?
And food!

The beauty of it is, they aren't necessarily colours I'd go for, but you can see how they work together. :)  I'm surprised by the amount of brown here - I'm not a 'brown' girl at all - the blue is no shock to anyone who knows me! So I've learnt something about myself and that always makes me happy.

Oh alright. One more...
sea urchins and starfish - peach through two shades of olive green, mauve and skintone colours
I've added more to my pinterest site. Come along and play too!

  3. I wrote a nice long comment ending by saying how much your post and colourful descriptions had brightened up my lunch hour... then I realised that in work I can't access the audio version of the security Captcha, so I couldn't post it!

    So here goes again...

Really nice of you to do those descriptions and explain a bit about my vision! If you tune in to Quilter in the Gap's podcast, due on Oct 5th, I've answered some interview questions so you might find out a little bit more about my sight and the challenges of quilting!

I do miss seeing colours though. Most things are grey verging on black, and white now. The one exception is bright yellows. If I walk past some daffodils I can tell they are yellow, and I think that will always be a sign of springtime that I look forward to!

Having been to Scotland a few times I can imagine those heathery blues and greens in the fabrics! I wrote a poem about how perceptions of colour change when you can't see them... the things you identify with colours, and if you have had some sight then the things that help you imagine the differences between different shades of a colour... I'll look that poem up for you!

mmmmm blueberry and chocolate fabric! yum!

  5. I love all the paint chip photos. I am still not sure if I am going to do that quilt along. Maybe after I see some.

Yippee - you're commenting! I _love_ comments. :) I've had so much spam lately though that I'm limiting to registered users for a bit to see if that works... If you're a friend, you can find me on Facebook and comment that way if you have trouble.
