More good fortune - Sunday

As it will be Monday here when this is posted, I'm joining up with Sew Modern Monday for the first time.

I have to say, Good Fortune is beginning to take on mystical properties in my mind. If you're new to my blog, read back the last couple of posts to see what I mean. Sunny weather, a new Ipad and sapphires have been involved. I suggest you run out and buy this line NOW - oh sorry, no you can't, it's not due till January..  :)


When I found the Good Fortune layer cake on line and managed to nab it, I started looking for good fortune symbols, with the idea of working one into a design. One symbol that kept appearing was the Hindu good fortune symbol also used and adapted in Buddhism, Jainism and a variety of other religions and cultures. You would definitely recognise it but may not know its origins and may actually have a very negative reaction to it. It means good luck, light, fortune and love which just fit perfectly with what I want from this quilt. So I went with a variation on the Hindu design...

After my cleaning fit on Saturday, the house resembled less of a fabric explosion and more of a home. So of course, it didn't feel like home and I had to fix that. The best way to do that was to keep working on my Good Fortune blocks and back some lovely Italian no-knead slow-rise Stecca. (Head over to Steamy Kitchen for the recipe - it's so worth it).

So I'd just pulled the garlic and rosemary encrusted Stecca out of the oven when there was a knock on the door... My lovely Indian neighbour who is 22 and a chef arrived bearing freshly cooked Paratha, an Indian flatbread stuffed with curried some-kind-of-cheese and a spiced yoghurt.

I offered her a Stecca in return (unfortunately had to lead her through the like a disaster area homely atmosphere I had created (by homely, I mean looking like a bakery which had experienced a fabric hurricane). She took one. (I felt a little embarrassed to be offering someone who has such mastery over spices something I'd cooked, which may taste a little bland to Indian tastebuds. Also embarrassed by fabric shop cum bakery zone but oh well, I am what I am). I wasn't sure how to eat the paratha so I put yoghurt on it, kind of rolled it up like a pancake and, after the first bite, stuffed it in my face as fast as I could. YUM -  Kudos to the chef!

So from Hindu symbols to Indian food and back again to my mystery good fortune symbol.

  If I told you it was banned from being displayed in Germany, might you have an idea of its name? Four variations of it here if you are still guessing... :) I am very pleased with how these blocks have turned out - and only the tiniest smidgen is left of a piece of layer cake - just enough to go on a Bottled Rainbow ticker-tape quilt :)

By the way, Erin of Missy Mac Creations very generously and selflessly offered to help me with my fabric mess by taking Good Fortune off my hands. Let me think about it - NO!!!!!
