This is going to be a lazy post. A very sick puppy has sapped my energy, so both today's block tutorials are courtesy of the Free Motion Quilting Project.
One of the lovely things about the Free Motion Quilting Project is that Leah rates designs by difficulty level. So I went with Block 3 as the easier rated first... But for me, block 4 was actually way easier. It certainly LOOKS scarier, but give it a go.
Block 3: Spiral illusion
I had a little trouble keeping the lines even with this, and I 'jumped' in one spot by accident, but it's not too bad.
Here is the video - and you can find more information here.
Row 2, Block 4
Now this one LOOKS scary, but I love the look of it so I had to try it... And it was much easier than it looks and I think it's spectacular. I can totally see myself using this one.
I'm really happy with this one - and my new Bernina 820 stitched it BEAUTIFULLY. The stitch quality is fantastic. I didn't used the Bernina stitch regulator for this - just hands, feet and brain!
More information on this design available here.
If you find it too difficult, you may like to try Leah's circuit board design instead.Looking forward to seeing your efforts next week. There are a few more of people's Row 1 efforts up now, so you may like to have a look.
Happy FMQing!

Just a bit of additional advice - Spiral Illusion might be easier if you mark the second set of lines with a marking pencil. Even I had trouble stitching that one totally free hand because the lines go all crazy on you with the second set.
ReplyDeleteWith Pointy Paisley just watch your thread play where the triangles start (your pivot point). If you start breaking thread in this area try switching to a thinner, stronger thread.
I can't wait to see the finished quilts!
Leah Day
oh boy - haven't even made last week's ones yet and now you bring up THESE - challenge indeed!
ReplyDeleteLovely work but doesn't that dense stitching make the quilt stiff?
ReplyDeleteI attended a class in FMQ with Kim Bradley two weeks ago. My efforts are n my latest post (if you're interested).
Lynne, On which of your blogs do you post about FMQ?
DeleteGosh, we are really moving along. I had trouble last week with the boxy stippling so I practiced more of it on a charity quilt. You can see it on my last post.
ReplyDeleteI did the designs - the first one have to be careful about getting it so the center ends up being the center! I ended up sewing a square in, then a rectangle out... Still looks nice. The second one wasn't fun to sew -but sure looks impressive!
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering - when we sew these blocks together will we be alternating so the blocks have short side on top, then short side on side - or if all will be oriented in the same direction. Or if it matters.
Thanks!
