But my finish is pretty amazing this week.
I took two days off work to do a workshop with Helen Godden, an Australian quilt artist who has won numerous awards and exhibited at Houston.
We spent a good day painting, and then another free-motion quilting and repainting our designs. Helen calls her designs 'Paintchwork'. I have barely painted since highschool and had problems staying inside the lines. There were some very talented artists in the room. Lots of people chose a limited palette and blended their colours beautifully. At the end of day one, mine looked like a pre-schooler had gone beserk with pots of paint. It comforted me that the workshop was called Flying into Colour, not creeping into colour. I flew into colour like a bird flies into a window.
Here is mine part way through.
And here is the finished product.
I just have to bind it.
Here is Helen's award winning quilt. It is one piece of black cloth. Un-frigging-believeable.
Oh how I wish I was this good!
In other news, here is the new addition to the family - Canvalier Mystique Melody (Melody). She's little, lively and heaps of fun. Lainey's not sure but I know she will love the company.
Now head back to The Nifty Stitcher and link up or say hi to Rhianon!
Hi Laura - this is an absolutley stunning piece !! Congratulations. I love the colours, design and the quilting. You should be very proud!
ReplyDeleteThanks you for saying nice things about me - I've really enjoyed doing the link up for TGIFF.
Hello Melody! (Just give Lainey a big ole slurp and she will love you!) Laura, LOVE the Unicorn, awesome job (and if you think that looks like preschool work I am in SO much trouble...LOL...). Seriously, perhaps you are being too hard on yourself? I think it is amazing!
ReplyDeleteYours is seriously amazing too! I'd seen photos of Helen's quilt and had wondered how in the world she'd done it - I had no idea it involved paint. Amazing technique, love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about?! Your piece is beautiful, Laura! That looks like such a cool workshop. Good for you for taking the time off to take it.

Those quilts are fantastic. And I don't know what you're talking about with this whole, "oh... I've never painted since high school. I'm going to m=be terrible. Woe is me." BAH! It looks amazing! You did a great job! And who doesn't like a good unicorn every now and then?!
ReplyDeleteAnd little Miss Melody looks so happy to be home with her new family. You'll have to tell me all about her personality and how she fits in with Lainey.
