I'm sure you're sick of me whining about the stinky hot weather and how I haven't got to finish a quilt because it's been 42C/110F in the shade ... Especially if you are up to your necks in snow or slush! So, to kick off a New Year of Finishes, here are a few little finishes from my week's holiday in the sauna that my house became.Firstly, as I've now handed this present over, another sunnies case, this one for Bev who loves France, pink and ice-cream (see the button?). :) I just love this Hoodie fabric.Second, this is a silly little 'finish' but my peg basket disintegrated in the sun and after a week of puppy eating pegs, I decided to use some fabric I'm not too mad on that isn't quilting cotton to do a 'make-do' peg bag. (See my rusty old laundry basket trolley? They don't make em like that any more, which is why I've dragged it from house to house long past its use-by date!).
Third, I treated myself to a sat-nav system in the sales. I buy electronics like men buy shoes - I walk in and say "that one". So I got a good deal on a Tomtom for no other reason than the guy said it was a good one and a good deal. Meh. If it does the job... But he did tell me I needed to put it away to prevent it being stolen and buy a case to protect the screen rather than just shove it in the glove box. When I declined, he said "It's your funeral madam" or words to that effect... So I went home and made myself a case.
The fabrics are Hometown by Sweetwater, Grunge by Basic Grey, and Etchings (Paris map - was there any other choice for a satnav?) by Three Sisters. I'm not sure what the inner fabric is. I did make a section from double sided fleecing which I sewed in to protect the screen from the plug/adaptor, which may not be necessary but was fun to see if I could do it and make it work or not!
Finally, if you are my sister-out-law stop reading NOW. (I don't think she reads my blog, so I think I'm safe...). But my mum commissioned an iPad cover for my brother's partner for Christmas and as she adores 'Tiffany Blue', these fabrics seemed perfect.
I put a zipper in which caused a bit of strife in terms of sizing, and little pocket in for headphones, along with my Quokka Quilts label. I used the Pellon wadding I bought in the US on Sara's recommendation and I LOVE it. I will have to order more next time someone goes! Now it's time to linky up and show off your first finishes of 2013!
if you need a fabric mule i'm happy to help :)
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely sewing projects. Hand made will protect just as well as store bought and is so much nicer!
ReplyDeleteMy niece had my sister visiting garage sales looking for just such a laundry trolley -- she doesn't like the new ones either! They finally bagged one that had been sitting in a garage doing nothing and looked as good as new!
Funnily enough I've been trying to buy a car the same way you bought your sat nav today, but apparently I must have look particularly grungy and unable to afford one, because no-one bothered their backside to help me, and the one patronising misogynistic old fart that eventually conceded to talk to me as as unhelpful as possible. I wanted to ask if he was that bothered about selling cars, but I didn't. I just found other places online with the same car and better deals...
ReplyDeleteSome nice little projects there. Oh and thanks for sending that heat over here to SA - 44 today - love a wall of heat when you go outside - Not!
ReplyDeleteMy parents reluctantly went hunting for a new one a few years back after a wheel fell off irreparably. They managed to find one like that somehow somewhere! Oh, and great work on the sat nav pouch!
ReplyDeleteWow, I am impressed. You've done so much. Don't tell me you don't have air con? We must start a relief fund if that's the case. Needless to say I am not enjoying the heat (I know, L tells me it isn't even hot!) after spending a month in the glorious UK and Eropean winter. Well done with all your finishes.
ReplyDeletegreat little pouches...I need to make some of those too!
ReplyDeletePretty pouches.
ReplyDeleteGreat makes and a well protected Tom Tom!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY want one of those laundry trollies, what a genius idea!
Ooh, great pouches, Laura! I'm going to have try some this year, I think!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pouches! If you ever feel like lots and lots and lots of rain for a change - come visit!
ReplyDeleteI love your pouches and what a great way to store & protect a GPS. I have to start thinking of fabric in these ways - too programmed to think of it in quilts I think!
ReplyDeleteI remember those laundry trolleys!
ReplyDeleteMuch prefer your satnav case to a boring one the shop prob sells
Niiice funeral. ;D So much better than anything they could have sold you, anyway! Love all of your pouches. That clothes roller is terrific. I'd hold onto it, too. Don't they have spray paint that's nice and thick, quite plasticky, that would be great to coat this with? Seems like I've heard of that. Might be worth a look? Keep it from rusting through on you.
ReplyDeleteOh! And P.S. - rather than growing weary of my Australian bloggy friends talk about their current weather, I rather enjoy the effect of witnessing the opposite of what I'm experiencing. It's a bit refreshing when I'm too cold or too hot to hear of the other extreme!
ReplyDeleteMy Mother-in-law has one of these laundry basket trolleys, I love it! Mind you, she brings hers in every day so it could be 600 years old but is still rust free. I on the other hand go through peg containers like nothing else! I love you new TOMTOM pouch. Much nicer than anything in store, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Wish my s-i-l s made wonderful gifts for me,
