Happy New Year! And a little puppy love

It has been a very quiet (and quick!) Christmas break for me. Temperatures have been sweltering - around 39-42 degrees Celcius for over a week. It has been too hot to sit in the sewing room (which doesn't have an AC vent) and definitely too hot to sit under one of the many projects that need quilting. So I've been piecing and finishing small projects instead.

Scarlett suggested I work on this Riley Blake charm pack.

But I had other projects to do (which I will show tomorrow and on Friday) so I removed it from the Monster and kicked my shoes to enjoy the cool of the tiles ...
Oops. Had to go shoe shopping to replace this pair.

I also caught three movies - most unusual but paying $10 per film for 2+ hours of refrigerated air conditioning each time seemed worth it!  I saw:
1) Skyfall. I saw this ON MY OWN... it was so damn hot and everyone bar me seems to have seen it. It is one of the better Bond movies in my opinion. The villain was perfectly villainous, the scenery magical and the depth of story better than many. It was back to traditional Bond in many ways. I won't say more in case you haven't seen it.
2) The Hobbit. Set great. 3D effects, fantastic. Length and my level of enthusiasm to endure more than 2 hours of this - blah. I won't be seeing parts 2 or 3 but before you write it off on my say-so, I didn't appreciate Lord of the Rings so I realise that I am a freak and a philistine.
3) Les Miserables. Wow. Anne Hathaway gets both thumbs and both big toes up from me. Her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" was ... astounding. Oscar material for sure.

Today was a humid 33 degrees which was nicer than the last few days although the house has heated up, a cool change in the afternoon and a sprinkle of rain has brought enough relief for us to get out into the garden.
Melody has been enjoying play-fighting with the Black Peril and the sounds that come out of these two   wouldn't sound amiss coming from characters from The Hobbit.

New Year's Eve was spent with the neighbours - one lovely set of neighbours are moving so it was a bit of a goodbye party as well as a New Year's Eve bash. There was champagne by the swimming pool at midnight with a glimpse of some illegal fireworks going off in the suburb north of us.

Wishing you all a very happy, prosperous and fabric-filled 2012!

  1. Hi Laura! I love to see your puppies! when we had puppy I remember when sitting at the table I left my flip flops from my feet but had to hold them under my feet - otherwise the puppy took them immidiately! We had also quiet holidays and it was nice.
Have you any exiting plans for the new year? x Teje

  4. Oh my goodness - I can't believe how much Scarlett has changed in a bit over two weeks! She has lost her puppy face! But she seems cute as ever, LOL. Happy New Year to you! How about I send you a bit of snow and you can send me several degrees of warmth? Hugs, Cathy

  6. Och you needed more shoes anyway... ;o)

Laughing at the reason for going to the flicks though, never usually a problem here...

  7. I've not seen Lord of the Rings movies either -- I refuse on the basis that they couldn't possibly do justice to the books! I will not be seeing the Hobbit for the same reason! Shall I join the ranks of the Philistines?

We have had hot weather but our house is fully air-conditioned so it has been bearable. No sewing here because I still have mum staying with me -- but that's another story!

NYE was spent under the air-con, in front of the television watching the Brisbane International Tennis tournament with a break for 9pm fireworks. We watched the midnight fireworks, kissed each other happy new year and went to bed! Fun, aren't we?

  9. Trouble with movie theaters is they turn out the lights and you can't get anything done. At least riding the train is warm or cool enough and if you ride a loop, you can even sit and work or read.(homeless use it as a place to sleep too)

  10. Well you've successfully waved your arms enough and shooed the hot weather over to us here in Adelaide. We've got a run of stinkers coming up! Black Peril - love it!

  11. So cute!
I get the going to movies at this time of year in Australia. I remember when the first LOTR film came out. Sitting in a queue for two hours before going in to watch a three hour movie with friends on boxing day was great. Lovely air con vs disgusting humid 41C outside. No brainer.
I used to go to the movies by myself all the time. Haven't been in ages or seen any of those three but I think I'm supposed to be seeing Les Mis with a friend this month

Yippee - you're commenting! I _love_ comments. :) I've had so much spam lately though that I'm limiting to registered users for a bit to see if that works... If you're a friend, you can find me on Facebook and comment that way if you have trouble.
